The value of ankle inclusion in ultrasound screening for crystal deposits and inflammation in asymptomatic hyperuricemia

Asymptomatic hyperuricemia (AH), defined as serum uric acid (SUA) ≥ 420 μmol/L for males or ≥ 360 μmol/L for females on two separate fasting measurements [1,2], is a key precursor to gout, with ∼ 30% of patients progressing to clinical gout within a decade via progressive monosodium urate (MSU) crystal deposition [1–3]. As a substantial global health burden with increasing prevalence and incidence worldwide [3–5], gout significantly impacts patients’ quality of life.
