Potential for AI as first reader in lung cancer screening

Early lung cancer (LC) detection by low-dose computed tomography (LDCT)-based lung cancer screening (LCS) has been proven to reduce LC-related mortality in heavy smokers by 20 to 39 % [1–3]. Based on such evidence, LCS programs are being implemented worldwide [4–6], leading to a significant increase in the workload for radiologists.
